Safeguarding drinking water supplies in Guinea-Bissau
By 2050, one in four people will live in a country that will be affected by chronic water pollution or water shortages. Over 1.8 billion people worldwide have access only to water contaminated with faeces. Approaches that help people in poor regions to treat drinking water are needed.
This applies in particular to the small town of Guinea Bissau on Africa’s west coast. This is one of the poorest countries in the world and, due to its geographical location on the edge of the Sahel zone, which is characterised by drought, it is an acute water problem.
We participate in the crowdfunding campaign of Bettervest from Frankfurt, whose team tracks down the extraordinary projects in Africa, supplies the people with clean energy and on top of that financially supports themselves. The water project works with solar energy and therefore scores with regard to the goals of resource efficiency and a regenerative energy supply.
Crowdfunding Bettervest has successfully proven that it is possible to finance development projects privately even in unusual countries such as Guinea-Bissau. By identifying projects that not only do good, but are financially viable, new projects can be financed again and again. Because while grants and donations are scarce, this does not apply to capital if the project pays off. For Gexsi, this means that any financial returns will be available to other projects in the future, enabling us to achieve even more ” impact “.
